Indoor vs Outdoor Newborn Photography: Which Is Right For Your Family?
It’s a common misconception that many parents believe newborn photos can ONLY happen indoors or in a studio, but a newborn photoshoot, outside, among the beauty of the world around us, can create some truly gorgeous moments. I’m not saying you should drag your two week old out to the forest in the middle of January, but I am saying, depending on the weather and season, there are other options available to you. So, if you’re wondering what would work best for your family, keeping reading…
Why Choose An In-Home Newborn Session?
There are SO many reasons why an in-home newborn session is great option and might be the perfect fit for your family.

No need to pack up a tiny baby
One of the biggest advantages of an in-home newborn session is that you don’t need to worry about getting everyone out of the house. In those early days, simply getting dressed and fed can feel like an achievement, so being able to stay in the comfort of your own home often makes the whole experience feel much more relaxed.
A familiar, relaxed environment
Many babies (and parents!) settle more easily at home. There’s no rushing, no travel time, and everything you might need is at your fingertips. This allows us to take things at your baby’s pace and create a calm, unhurried experience.
A meaningful setting
Your home is part of your family’s story. Whether it’s cuddles on the sofa, feeding in the nursery, or simply being together in the rooms where these early days are unfolding, in-home sessions capture memories that become more meaningful as the years pass.
Perfect for winter babies
During the colder months, in-home sessions are often the most practical option. We can make the most of natural window light while keeping everyone warm and comfortable.
Including the little details
From the nursery you’ve spent months preparing to favourite blankets, books and family routines, in-home sessions naturally weave these details into your photographs. These are often the things parents are most grateful to remember years later.

One thing I hear all the time is ‘our house isn’t photo-worthy’. The truth is that good light matters far more than perfect décor, and most families are surprised by how little space we actually need.
Why Choose An Outdoor Newborn Session?
If you’re drawn to the outdoors, your house is currently a building site, or getting out of the house feels like a breath of fresh air, a newborn session in nature might just be right for you…

Beautiful natural light
Natural light is one of the reasons I love outdoor sessions. Soft evening light can create beautiful, flattering images with a sense of warmth and space that can be difficult to replicate indoors.
A beautiful backdrop
From wildflower meadows to long grasses and open countryside, outdoor sessions allow nature to become part of your story. The changing seasons can add an extra layer of beauty and character to your photographs.
Perfect for families who love being outdoors
If your family feels most at home in nature, an outdoor newborn session can be a lovely way to reflect that. Whether it’s a favourite local spot or simply being outside together, these sessions often feel relaxed and natural.
Great for older siblings
Outdoor sessions can work particularly well for families with older children. Having space to explore, run and play often helps siblings feel more comfortable and engaged, resulting in more natural interactions and genuine moments.
Flexible timing
Unlike traditional posed newborn photography, my sessions aren’t tied to a specific age window. Whether your baby is a few days old, a couple of weeks old, or a little older, we can still create beautiful, meaningful images. If you’re dreaming of an outdoor newborn session but don’t feel quite ready in those first few weeks, that doesn’t mean you’ve missed your chance.
What About Siblings?
If you’re also bringing along an older child (or two!), it’s completely normal to wonder which setting will work best for them.
For shy or cautious children, being at home can often feel reassuring. They’re in a familiar environment, surrounded by their favourite toys and comforts, which can help them relax into the session more naturally.
On the other hand, some toddlers simply aren’t built for sitting still - and that’s okay too. Outdoor sessions can be wonderful for energetic little ones, giving them space to explore, move and play while still creating beautiful opportunities for connection and cuddles.
The truth is that every child is different. When helping families choose between an indoor or outdoor newborn session, I’ll always consider your children’s personalities alongside practical things like the season and weather. The goal is never perfectly behaved children; it’s creating an environment where everyone can feel comfortable enough to be themselves.
One thing I always recommend when older siblings are involved is to have someone on hand to take them off for a break/wander/play/snack at some point during the session so we have a moment to capture some really intimate moments between mum and baby.
Which One Do I Recommend?
The honest answer? There isn’t a right or wrong choice.
Both indoor and outdoor newborn sessions can result in beautiful, meaningful photographs, and the best option is usually the one that feels most natural for your family.
When helping families decide, I consider things like the season, the available light in your home, your children’s personalities, how you’re feeling after birth, and the type of images you’re most drawn to. Some families love the intimacy and storytelling of an in-home session, while others can’t imagine anything better than being outdoors together.
If you’re unsure, don’t worry - you don’t need to have all the answers before booking. I’m always happy to help you decide which option will work best for your family and the experience you’d like to create.
