WHAT TO WEAR FOR SUMMER FAMILY PHOTOS IN OXFORDSHIRE

One of the biggest worries I hear from families before their session is:

“What on earth are we supposed to wear?”

The good news? You absolutely do not need to buy a whole new wardrobe.

For summer family photos, I usually encourage clients to think about textures, movement and colour palettes rather than matching perfectly. Soft linens, cottons, knits and earthy tones tend to photograph beautifully and keep the focus where it belongs - on connection rather than clothes.

For this outfit inspiration board, I’ve chosen soft neutrals, natural textures and pieces that feel relaxed, timeless and comfortable enough to actually move, cuddle and play in.

Remember: coordinate, don’t match. And when in doubt? Dress mum first and build everyone else around that.

Why this works:

  • Soft textures create depth and movement

  • Neutral tones keep attention on faces and connection

  • Coordinating colours feel more natural than matching outfits

  • Layers and accessories add interest without overwhelming the image

What Colours Work Best for Summer Family Photos?

For summer family photos, I tend to encourage clients towards soft, earthy tones rather than anything too bright or saturated. Think creams, oat tones, browns, muted greens, soft blues and warm rusts. These colours photograph beautifully in long grass, wildflowers and golden hour light without competing for attention.

The goal isn’t for everyone to match perfectly - it’s to choose colours that sit well together and feel cohesive.

What Should Dads Wear?

Poor dads often get forgotten when planning outfits!

For dads, I usually recommend keeping things simple. Linen shirts, neutral t-shirts, lightweight knits and chinos or linen trousers work beautifully. Summer sessions often involve lots of movement, cuddles and carrying children, so comfort matters just as much as style.

If in doubt: avoid bright logos, sportswear and trainers you’d wear to the gym.

What To Avoid Wearing

There aren’t many hard rules, but there are a few things I’d generally recommend avoiding.

Large logos, neon colours and very bold patterns can draw attention away from faces and connection. Matching everyone exactly can also sometimes feel a little dated or make photos look flatter than intended.

Most importantly though - wear something you feel like yourself in. If you feel uncomfortable, it usually shows.

Where To Shop

You absolutely do not need to buy a completely new wardrobe for your family photos (please don’t feel like you have to!).

Some of my favourite places to look for family session outfits include H&M, Zara, Next, M&S and Vinted. The goal isn’t expensive clothes - it’s choosing pieces that feel comfortable, cohesive and like you.
